South Bend Civic Theatre will present the laugh-riot comedy The 39 Steps March 2-18. Written by Patrick Barlow from the classic spy novel by John Buchan and the celebrated film by “master of suspense” Alfred Hitchcock, this comedy took Broadway by storm, running for two years of packed houses after originating in London, and winning awards on both sides of the Atlantic. Full of inventive staging, madcap comedy, and thrilling echoes of classic chase yarns, this is a show that will leave you breathless – from laughter!
In a wild mash-up of suspense and pastiche, Richard Hannay finds himself on the run when he is implicated in a murder, launching a desperate search to clear his name and solve the mystery of the nefarious group the 39 Steps. Just four actors play over 100 characters in this frenetic slice of theatrical magic.
Audiences and critics alike have been steamrolled by this theatrical phenomenon. The New York Times called The 39 Steps an “absurdly enjoyable, gleefully theatrical riff on Hitchcock’s film.” The Los Angeles Times hailed the play’s strategy of “conquer by tickling” and praised the “larky ingenuity.” The New York Post called it “riotous and marvelous” and “the most entertaining show on Broadway.” Variety termed the play as “a giddy display of theatrical invention.”
Performances are in the Wilson Mainstage Auditorium at South Bend Civic Theatre, 403 N. Main Street, South Bend. Parking is free on site.
