School district faces budget deficit
An Elkhart County school district facing a huge budget deficit may shut down a school to save money.
The Baugo Township School Corporation is about $700,000 in the red for the next school year.
To make up for the shortfall, the district has proposed shutting down Jimtown North Elementary School. The move would save around $250,000 per year and prevent teacher layoffs.
The school's 300 students would then be sent into one of two other schools, Jimtown South Elementary or Jimtown Junior High.
If the school board approves the shutdown, Jimtown North would sit idle for at least two years.
