ABC57 and St. Joseph Co. Police host pill drop

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- ABC57 and the St. Joseph County Police Department teamed up to hold a pill drop Tuesday afternoon.

The pill drop is a drive up, drop off event outside the police department on W. Sample Street.

The drop off started at 4 p.m. and will end at 7 p.m.

  • All pills should be in a sealed plastic baggy.
  • Liquids, syringes and pill bottles are not accepted.

Discarding unwanted medication keeps it out of the wrong hands.

Assistant Chief Bill Thompson says the pill drops are beneficial to the community.

"I think it gives folks a sense of comfort to be able to turn those things over to law enforcement, and know that they’re going to be destroyed, all the packaging is going to be destroyed, that everything will be taken care of and there’s no chance of falling into the wrong hands. I think that gives folks a sense of well-being about it. And frankly, especially for a drive-up one like this, it’s pretty easy so we’re hoping for a lot of folks to come out tonight and get rid of some of those things that they just don’t need," Thompson said.
