ELKHART, Ind. -

The Elkhart Education Foundation’s 4th annual Kick Off Classic in Elkhart is taking place Thursday at Island Park.

This city-wide back to school event is presented by the Seifert Drug. The goal is to help kids get the supplies they need for school.

The festivities start at 5 p.m. with a family carnival, food and entertainment.

It will continue through 9 p.m. with a traditional lip sync battle and pep rally with Elkhart school’s bands and cheerleaders.

All new this year is a golf cart parade. Each school building will decorate a cart in their school’s pride.

The entry fee is one school supply per person. Those supplies will be distributed through Elkhart Community Schools. Elkhart Education Foundation Executive Director Ashley Molyneaux says pencils, notebooks, dry erase markers and loose leaf paper are all highly requested school supplies.

The Elkhart Education Foundation says its goal is to bridge the gap in funding for the schools in Elkhart. This event is just one of the many things the foundation does to achieve that goal.

Molyneaux says she expects a few thousand people at Thursday’s event. Those involved with the Kick Off Classic say it has grown every year. This year the event was moved to Island Park to create more space.

“We hope this event continues to grow over the years and becomes a weekend-long celebration for our kids, schools and community; something everyone will look forward to every year,” said Hass Hakim, owner of presenting sponsor Seifert Drugs.
