SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- An Elkhart church gave back to a nearby school on Sunday giving it’s students backpacks full of school supplies.

Fr. Joshua Nelson said the St. David’s Episcopal Church gave away more than 50 backpacks to children going into kindergarten and 1st grade at Mary Feeser Elementary students.

“Dry erase markers, color markers, notebooks, and folders,” said Cynthia Guzzo, one of the organizers for the supply giveaway.

Fr. Nelson said he was a teacher before he became a priest. He said he know the beginning of thes chool year can be hard on both teachers and parents.

“Prices of things are going up and up,” he said. “Having someway they can just come in, pick up, and you’re ready for the first day of school is really important.”

Families flooded into the church to pick up the backpacks, which were almost as big as the students. Beth Porter has a son going back to school on Thursday, she said she’s thankful the church is helping her family.

“You’ve got so many other things to pick up and get for the kids and get ready,” she said. “So it’s nice to have somebody to give back.”
