Ninth annual magical ice fest

SAINT JOSEPH, Mich. -- New this year at the Saint Joseph annual magical ice fest, they had an ice carving battle.

Ice carvers from all over the region transformed blocks of ice into a wintry, outdoor sculpture gallery, using chainsaws and chisels.

The ice sculpture duels set two ice carvers up against each other for a 15 minute competition. The crowd got to participate and vote for which sculpture they like the best.

"We wanted to kick it up a notch and give the carvers a chance to go against each other, a little competitive spirit and give the crowd something to cheer on," said Jill Stone, the executive director of Saint Joe Today. "At the same time, we wanted to keep people down here a little bit longer and maybe choose to hit up our stores a little bit later and eat out a little bit later."

More events continue at the ice fest on Feb. 10.
