LaPorte woman arrested for DUI after crash

LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind., -- A LaPorte woman is in jail after a crashing on the toll road early Sunday morning.

According to Indiana State Trooper Andrew Baldwin, Brittany L. Lockhart, 22 of LaPorte was attempting to enter the toll road and head west from the Toll Plaza on State Road 9 in Howe when she failed to maneuver a tight curve and drove her vehicle across the westbound lanes.

After crossing the westbound lanes Lockhart then drove into the median and across the eastbound lanes into oncoming traffic, police said..

According to Baldwin she made a u-turn and drove back north across the eastbound lanes before stopping in the median.

Baldwin arrived on scene at about 12:45 a.m. and found Lockhart unconscious next to her vehicle on the ground, police said.

When Baldwin was able to get Lockhart to regain consciousness he smelled alcohol coming from her breath.

Further investigation by Baldwin revealed that she was driving with BAC of almost three times the legal limit of .08% and had also been using a controlled substance earlier in the day, police said.

Lockhart was transported to and assessed at Parkview LaGrange Hospital for minor injury treatment before being released to Baldwin’s custody.

Lockhart is being held at LaGrange County jail on the charges of Operating While intoxicated, Greater than .15% Class A Misdemeanor, Operating with a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance in the Body, Class C Misdemeanor, and Operating a Vehicle with an Altered Interim License Place, Class C Misdemeanor.
