Middlebury 16-year-old dies in crash

ELKHART, Ind. – A 16-year-old boy from Middlebury was killed in a car crash Thursday afternoon around 4 p.m.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, the 16-year-old driver and his passenger were traveling northbound on County Road 39 when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone while approaching a hill.

The driver then swerved into the lane to avoid oncoming traffic and lost control of his vehicle, which rolled multiple times before stopping and catching fire.

Police say that the driver died from the burns he sustained after the crash. The passenger was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene.

Authorities have not released the name of the driver or his passenger at this time.

The Elkhart County Crash Investigation team is investigating and will determine if any other factors contributed to this crash.
