CHICAGO -- The University of Notre Dame made a major announcement in downtown Chicago regarding the Shamrock Series in 2020 and 2021.
At the Under Armour Brand House Monday morning, officials from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Wisconsin announced the two teams would be going head to head for the first time since 1964.
"It just felt right. Good for both teams," said Barry Alvarez, Wisconsin's athletic director.
It starts on October 3, 2020 when the Irish and Badgers play in Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
"Lambeau was sort of a linchpin for us. We wanted Wisconsin as the opponent, that's what gives the game the most energy, the most excitement. But for us, the process began with the question of 'How do we get to Lambeau?'" Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame's athletic director, said.
On September 25, 2021 the two teams will meet up at Soldier Field in Chicago.
"Soldier Field is the perfect venue in Chicago. The question is, who is going to be the home team?" said Mike Kelly, General Superintendent Chicago Parks Department.
"The fan base, the alumni base they have in the Midwest. It's a win for everybody," said Mark Murphy, CEO & President of the Green Bay Packers.
Swarbrick and Alvarez started discussing this idea more than a decade ago.
