Organizations come together for Berrien County Holiday Food Sharing Program

Benton Harbor's biggest organizations and businesses are coming together to make sure families have a happy holiday.

The Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency is doing a Holiday Food Sharing program. It's sponsored by the City of Benton Harbor, Whirlpool, and the PGA.

It's all about helping area families in need. The program will collect and distribute 400 turkeys, hams, and food boxes to residents of Benton Harbor, Benton Charter Township, and St. Joseph.

This is the second year for the program. 600 families received support in 2015. And with the help of the city government, SMCAA is expanding it and hoping to reach more people. And they are also hoping make the process more organized for those in need.

"Giving back to the community," said Yvonne Vidt with the Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency.  "To those that really are in need. And when I go home for the holidays I really feel like we have touched everyone."

Families in need can register at different locations, including The United Way, Mosaic, and Benton Harbor city hall. If you're eligible, you will receive notification by mail.

The deadline to apply is Monday at 4:30pm. The food will be distributed the following Thursday.
