Purdue student dies after fall from apartment balcony, ruled a suicide

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — A 19-year-old Purdue University student has died after falling from the balcony of an apartment on the top floor of a 10-story complex near the school's West Lafayette campus. Authorities have ruled the death suicide.

The Journal & Courier reported Sunday that the woman was found about 2 a.m. Saturday.

West Lafayette police Lt. Jon Eager tells the Journal & Courier that other people in the apartment with the student told police they were trying to talk with her when she left the room early Saturday, climbed through a window and jumped. Eager says she lived in the apartment.

The death occurred during Purdue's Homecoming weekend. The university says the student's family has requested privacy and has asked that the university not release additional details.

The apartment complex opened about a month ago.
