Suspect arrested in connection to armed robbery at IUSB

SOUTH BEND — Indiana University South Bend officials have released the name of a suspect involved with the armed robbery that took place on campus early Wednesday morning.

Fred Brand was arrested Wednesday afternoon by the Strategic Focus Unit on a robbery warrant.

Detectives continue to speak to Brand as he is believed to be involved with multiple other robberies in South Bend.

A juvenile was also picked up with Brand and was transported to the JJC.

According to a university spokesperson, a victim reported that a black male approached him or her and displayed a handgun outside Northside Hall shortly before 7 a.m. The suspect was able to get away with the victim's cell phone before taking off toward Memorial Park.

A campus-wide text alert was sent to students and staff around 7:30 a.m.

IUSB officials decided to not place the campus on lockdown because they determined no one else was ever in any danger due to the suspect's quick getaway.

No one was hurt.

IUSB is asking that those with any information on the crime report their tips to IUSB Police, South Bend Police or CrimeStoppers.
