Checking your tires for the summer

The Indy 500 isn’t the only event this weekend that involves a lot of driving.

Millions of Americans across the country are taking to the roads for Memorial Day.

If you’re not that tire savvy, you’re not alone.

A recent survey by the Rubber Manufacturers Association revealed only 17 percent of drivers know how to properly check tire pressure.

Today, though, is the first day of National Tire Safety Week.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, each year 1.2 billion gallons of fuel are wasted in the United States because people are driving vehicles with under inflated tires.

To educate drivers on proper tire care, Discount Tire, the Rubber Manufacturers Association and NASCAR Team Penske are teaming up this week as part of National Tire Safety Week.

The NHTSA estimates improper tire care causes 200 fatalities and 11,000 injuries each year.
