New coffee shop and deli opens in South Bend

A brand new coffee shop is now open in South Bend. The General Deli and Cafe opened this past week and is now serving customers.

It is located off of East Jefferson Boulevard across the street from Howard Park and is in the old general store.

For General Manager Richard Garrett, he said this location is a good spot for a new shop.

“I just feel like this area is really seeing a lot of development. I think that this is the perfect thing that will fit here and I’ve always loved my coffee,” Garrett said.

He is not the only one who feels this way. "The East Bank in the last 10 years has seen a lot of development both residential and restaurants, commercial, and I think it’s a good time to be in the East Bank,” said Myles Robertson who frequents The General.

The owners hope to create a comfy and casual atmosphere for all guests with a variety of menu options.

“Right now we have a small sandwich menu as well as soups, salads, the main baked goods, locally made muffins, locally made breads,” Garrett added.

At this time The General is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the near future, they hope to expand hours to better meet the demands of their morning and evening guests.
