Parents angered over SBCSC bus stop problems

Last school year, ABC 57 first told you about a bus driver shortage for South Bend Community Schools that caused a lot of headaches for students and parents.

Now, the start of a new school year in South Bend is presenting more of the same problems.

According to the transportation section, on the South Bend Community School Corporation website, “safety is our #1 priority. We use the best equipment available for your child's protection. We have state-of-the-art buses with GPS tracking, crossing gates, computerized routing, and video cameras.”

But you won’t find that same statement, written by Director of Transportation Mel Falkner, in the school corporation’s most recent post.

On Tuesday, they posted this on their Facebook page:

“The "Mystop" system is working to track the movement of buses, but there are a number of buses without operational GPS systems.”

“Mystop” lets parents see when their child’s bus is approaching.

But some parents say buses have struggled to arrive altogether.

One parent, Sharonda Smith, wrote this on the corporation’s Facebook page:

"My daughter was left at Perley yesterday for two hours. Didn’t get a call from transportation, I called the school that’s how I found my child was still there.”

South Bend Schools say they’ve added more personnel to answer phones.

The number for the  transportation hotline is 283-7582.
