Early morning hit and run in Elkhart County leaves one man injured

A hit and run just north of Middlebury early Monday morning leaves one man with bodily injuries after being thrown from his motorcycle. 

Deputies from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call at approximately 4:35 a.m. on County Road 2. 

Deputies say 52-year-old Larry Cockburn of Middlebury was traveling westbound on County Road 2 towards County Road 37 on a motorcycle when a tan Nissan Maxima traveling in the eastbound lane swerved to avoid a bicyclist.

The vehicle struck the motorcycle head-on, throwing Cockburn from his bike. 

According to officials, the driver of the vehicle did not stop at the scene when the incident happened and did not report the crash.

It is reported that Cockburn was not wear a helmet and did sustain injuries including road rash, swelling of both knees, and swelling and contusions to his face. 

Deputies say an investigation of the driver of the vehicle has been opened.
