Art Beat 2012

Art Beat returns on Saturday, August 25, to downtown South Bend from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. The streets of downtown South Bend will be transformed into a living gallery as artists, dancers, musicians, actors, poets, and culinary specialists display their talents. The family-friendly event is open to the public with free admission.

Over 300 artists will take part in Art Beat 2012 making this the largest concentration of artists in downtown since the event’s debut in 2004. Visual artists of every kind will come together showcasing a variety of mediums such as watercolor, jewelry, print making, drawing, pottery, sculpting and fiber arts. Multiple stages and venues will accommodate performing artists ranging from singers and dancers to fashion shows and poetry readers. Performers will roam the downtown streets and plazas; others will take their talents to one of four main stages located at the corner of Michigan and Washington Streets, the patio at DoubleTree by Hilton, Key Bank Plaza, and inside the State Theatre.

New this year, event-goers will want to leave a mark on one of the community art projects taking place during Art Beat. Downtown South Bend, Inc. has partnered with local artist, Ben Roseland, to create an original piece of art with a South Bend twist. That artwork will be divided into one inch squares. While material lasts, the community is invited to paint what they see on a one-inch square onto a one-foot tile. Following Art Beat, the one-foot tiles will be placed together to form one large art piece and displayed permanently in downtown. Fiddler’s Hearth Public House, 127 N. Main Street, invites everyone to finish the street art on the building’s south exterior wall. The graffiti theme is “We are South Bend”. All messages and images must be family friendly. Paint and scaffold will be provided. Both projects are open to all and require no previous art experience.

Culinary Arts Village returns for a third year in a new, larger location. Fifteen culinary teams will gather in the lot located at Jefferson and St. Joseph Streets. The tented Village will feature artistic food creations, displays, and demonstrations by area eateries, chefs, and culinary students. Wine and beer selections will also be offered for those over 21 years of age.

Alongside Art Beat, the South Bend Jazz Festival will offer a preview stage featuring four national musicians in Jon Hunt Plaza from Noon until 7 p.m. The preview is free and open to all ages. More information on the Jazz Festival is available at www.SouthBendJazzFestival.com.

There will be free all day parking on downtown streets as well as in the garages at Main/Colfax, Jefferson/Michigan and Wayne/St. Joseph Streets. Paid parking will be available in the Century Center parking lot. For more information about this event, visit: www.ArtBeatSouthBend.org.

In the event of rain, Art Beat will take place on Sunday, August 26. Artists and media will be notified by 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, should the event be delayed due to rain.

Grant support is provided by Visit South Bend/Mishawaka; the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County; John, Anna & Martha Jane Fields Foundation; and NIPSCO.
