Dundee police, volunteers help make the season bright for deserving kids

Dundee, Michigan (WTVG) -- Every kid dreams of the chance to pick out whatever they want from the toy aisle. But for some, that opportunity isn't easy to come by, let alone, the guarantee of having a gift under the Christmas tree.

"We just moved here and now I know she can have a Christmas," Destiny Mathers, a Dundee mom said.

"I'm a single parent," Grant Stroup said. " Between taking care of her [my daughter] and my mom it's rough. So, I"m just happy they can have something like this to help out."

Wednesday, officers and Volunteers in Police Service, or VIPS, in Dundee helped 10 kids check items of their lists during the 4th annual Shop with a Cop at the Meijer in Monroe, Michigan.

"We love to watch their expressions," Sgt. Randy Sehl, Dundee Police Department, said.

Each family was treated to dinner and a $150 shopping spree at Meijer, not to mention another $50 for groceries.

It was clear that the parents enjoyed it as much as the kids.

"She's got what she needs, but now, she can get what she wants," Mathers said.

"It's just nice that she gets to go and pick out stuff that she wants," Stroup told 13abc.

That's the reason why local police departments continue this tradition year after year, because there's nothing sweeter than a child's smile during the holidays.

"It's exciting to see that," Brian Karl, VIPS said.

The police department worked with the school system to choose the children who would be joining them for the shopping trip. It was all funded through community donations.
