Illinois man dies in Lake Michigan
ST. JOSEPH, Mich. – Berrien County officials have confirmed a 66-year-old man died in Lake Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
When units responded to the Rocky Gap park area around 4 p.m. they found multiple good Samaritans and a family member trying resuscitate the man.
Officials say Robert Amenitsch was on a raft being towed by a boat at a low rate of speed. While being towed, Amenitsch rolled onto his back and then into the water.
The operator, Amenitsch’s son, turned the boat around and located his father in the water unresponsive.
Amenitsch was taken to shore where his son and good Samaritans performed CPR. He was then taken to a Coast Guard vessel and taken to the St. Joseph Michigan Coast Guard Station.
Despite prolonged life saving efforts, Amenitsch was pronounced dead at the Coast Guard Station.
