Local Veteran's Day events
Local companies are taking part in honoring the many United States veterans Friday. From assemblies to free haircuts, businesses are looking to treat those who served the country.
Drive & Shine free Diamond car wash
Drive & Shine locations in South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, and Shereville will offer U.S. military veterans a free Diamond car wash, a $20 value.
JCPenny's Veteran's Day discount
JCPenny stores nationwide will offer a 5 percent discount from November 10th through November 13th for current and former U.S. military personnel and their families with a valid military or VA identification.
Hair Crafters to give free haircuts to veterans
Hair Crafters of South Bend will host the third annual Haircuts for Veterans event Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. All U.S. military veterans will receive the free service including consultation, shampoo, cut, and style. The salon says if they are unable to service a customer, they will give the veteran a certificate to come back at a later date. There will also be live music by Paul Erdman and complimentary refreshments.
Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese offers remarks
Elkhart's mayor, Tim Neese, will give his remarks at two different Veteran's Day events Friday. At 8 a.m., the mayor will speak at the 25th annual Veteran's Day Assembly at West Side Middle School where approximately 40 Elkhart Veterans will be in attendance. At 11 a.m., he will speak again at Rice Cemetery where the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19 will be hosting a public event.
Veterans Day Program hosted by Northwood Middle School
This event hosted by Northwood Middle School in Wakarusa, will begin at 8 a.m. Friday in the school's old gymnasium. According to the school, the Indiana Army National Guard will serve as the color guard for the event and the seventh and eighth grade choir will sing patriotic songs and the national anthem.
Lakeside Middle School's special presentation
Middle school students at Lakeside Middle School in Fort Wayne and those from the VA Northern Indiana Healthcare System will honor U.S. military veteran with the national anthem sang by the school's choir and a special presentation by the Director of the organization. The event begins at noon Friday at the VAMC Auditorium in Fort Wayne.
McDonald's free meal
Local McDonald's restaurants will offer a free Extra Value Meal to former and current military personnel on Friday. The meals will be offered in St. Joseph, Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Marshall, Pulaski, and Starke Counties in Indiana and Cass County and Berrien County in Michigan from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The company says its a small way of saying 'thank you' to the men and women who serve the United States.
The South Shore Line to give free rides to veterans
The South Shore Line is inviting all veterans and active military members to utilize the train for free Friday through Sunday. SSL says they are honored to offer this service to veterans. On Friday, the trains will follow regular weekday service hours.
Veteran's Day programs at two Penn-Harris-Madison schools
Two PHM schools will host their annual Veteran's Day programs Friday. Beginning at 9:15 a.m., former Governor of Indiana and Purple Heart recipient, Joe Kernan, will speak at Grissom Middle School. PHMSC says the second event will take place at Schmucker Middle School starting at 9:45 a.m., where retired Chief Warrant Officer Richard Cardossa will speak. The programs are open to students and their families.
Twin Branch Elementary's Veteran's Day Parade
Beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, Twin Branch Elementary students will host a parade led by Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood. The students who made mini floats to honor local veterans, will showcase them during the parade. The school says All veterans are invited to join the parade and walk with the students.
