Michigan Blood hosts blood drives throughout the state in October, November
Michigan Blood, the sole provider for blood and blood products for more than 60 Michigan hospitals, is hosting blood drives throughout the state in October and November as a part of their Blood Buddies initiative.
Inspired by Saginaw, MI resident, Rebecca Meeker, the program encourages Michigan residents to give back to their communities by donating blood which will go directly to area hospitals and patients in need.
The organization says Meeker, who has been a part of the Michigan Blood program since 2000, realized the importance of blood donation sixteen years ago when she discovered that she was a match for a young girl in need of a bone marrow transplant.
That marrow transplant in December of 2000, combined with her subsequent peripheral blood stem cell donation five months later, created an unbreakable bond between Meeker and the young girl which has remained with Meeker to this day.
"What is it costing me when I can help someone else? I’d hope someone would do the same for me and my family if we were in need," she says.
Blood drives are being held through the months of October and November in Cass County, Berrien County and St. Joseph County.
