Michigan City spending $300K on roads battered by last winter

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) — Michigan City is spending $300,000 for emergency repairs to local roads that were battered by last winter's harsh weather.

City council members approved the emergency funding last week for the repairs in the city along Lake Michigan that's about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Chicago.

The money comes from riverboat casino revenue.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports that the money could have been used for bus shelters, playground equipment or other needs.

Council member Tim Bietry says Mayor Ron Meer had told the council he wanted the road-repair money to come from the riverboat revenue fund. Bietry says the mayor had said he wouldn't be asking the city's Redevelopment Commission to pay for the work.
