Park renamed for officer killed in 1988 school shooting

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago park has been renamed in honor of a police officer who was killed when a gunman opened fire inside a school three decades ago.

The park on Chicago's Southwest Side is now known as Irma C. Ruiz Park.

Ruiz was one of the first female Chicago officers killed in the line of duty. She was fatally shot in 1988 when a 40-year-old man barged into a West Side school and opened fire. A custodian also was killed, and Ruiz's partner, Officer Greg Jaglowski, was wounded.

Jagolowski, who killed the gunman, Fjamsaid during Friday's renaming ceremony that Ruiz would be proud of her family, who also attended.

Her daughter, Irma Ruiz-Collins, said she hopes kids will talk about playing at Irma C. Ruiz Park for generations to come.
