Top 10 ranked LSU Tigers best the Irish in baseball season opener
BATON ROUGE, LA. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost a nail-biter against the #9 ranked Louisiana State University Tigers to start the 2018 NCAA Baseball season.
LSU held a record 12,844 people at Alex Box Stadium on Friday night, and the attendees got their tickets worth to see the first game of the year.
The Irish came out strong getting batters around the bases in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings.
Cole Daily kept the Irish going at the plate hitting a perfect 4-4 while scoring two runs. Matt Vierling got on base twice hitting .500 and Nick Podkul brought in two runners with a double going 1-3 on the night.
Irish Pitcher Scott Tully was on the mound for 5 innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits while walking 3 batters and striking out another 3.
Although the Irish fought hard it was not enough to overcome the Tigers onslaught.
LSU had 7 batters over .250 with Bryce Jordan smashing a clutch 6th inning grand slam into left field before Josh Smith would seal the deal by crushing a 3 run homer down the right field line to put the Tigers up 7-6 in the bottom of the 8th.
The Tigers are looking to redeem themselves after falling short in Omaha at the 2017 NCAA Men’s College World Series against SEC rival Florida.
LSU has dominated The Road to Omaha 6 of the 30 times they have appeared, last winning when the tournament was held in Rosenblatt Stadium.
Notre Dame is just as familiar with Omaha, having appeared in the tournament 22 times and taking home two titles, last appearing in 2015.
The Irish have gone 5-3 in season openers with head coach Mik Aoki, and will look to bounce back in their next two games out of their three game series against LSU.
