The goal is simple! The ABC57 First Warning Neighborhood Weather Team will spend each school day for an entire month speaking to children about how to understand and stay safe during severe weather. We have put all of the important information into a 30-40 minute presentation that fits a normal class schedule. The presentations are built to be assembly style, so there is no maximum number of students per school!
Each student will receive a book created specifically for this presentation [View the book] covering all facets of severe weather and safety. They will be shown a video covering historic Michiana tornado outbreaks and how to find the safe spot in their homes. Our hope is to have the students talk with their families about what they have learned.
The mission is to get as many people prepared for severe weather season as possible. May and June are prime time for severe weather in Michiana. Project: Tornado allows us to get the right information to the most students. By teaching children in grades 2 through 6, the information is received and shared throughout the household. So while we may speak to 5,000 students we know it is shared to entire families making that number multiply by several times.
