LaPorte County, Ind. -- The LaPorte County Board of Zoning and Appeals discussing and working out details for a proposed utility station near Walkerton.
The company, Open Road Renewables and Monroe Power, are known for utility-scale solar projects in North Carolina, Maryland, Georgia, and Texas.
The $150 million project under consideration is a battery energy storage system, also known as BESS, that would serve Indiana's electric grid in LaPorte County and surrounding areas.
Initial development plans laid out construction stages on a 71-acre property. The plan was amended to just 14 acres on Tuesday.
Some neighboring residents worry the station’s location will be too close to residential areas and wetlands.
The latest plan’s decision has been pushed back 30 days while the zoning board gathers more information.
