SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Cubs had their home opener tonight against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
The crowd came out excited for the first home game of the season for the Cubs.
The game started out as pitchers' duel with no runs until the seventh inning when the Timber Rattlers got on the board with a single in the top of the seventh. The Cubs tied it in the bottom of the eighth from a solo blast from Casey Opitz.
In the top of the ninth, the Timber Rattlers plated two more off a single and double, giving them the two-run lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
Despite having the tying run at the plate, the Cubs could not tie the game and fell three to one.
Cubs pitchers had nine punch outs compared to the Timber Rattlers' eight. The Cubs' four base knocks provided one run, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Timber Rattlers' three runs off eight hits.
