MICHIANA - Even with a rainy spring, the threat of drought in Michiana lurks beneath the surface.
Rain fell once again across Michiana on Friday, as our very rainy spring shows no signs of stopping.
In fact, many locations have seen a rainfall surplus of at least three inches so far since March 1.
With even more rain on the way, you would suppose that a drought is not likely even as temperatures warm up this summer.
However, thanks to our snowfall deficit this past winter, drought could quickly sneak up on us later this year.
With a "snowfall drought" of nearly three feet in some areas, the "bottom layer" of water that we usually build up during the winter and early spring is missing.
The lack of winter snowfall could put Michiana at risk of "flash drought," or rapidly occurring drought, later this summer.
