Berrien County Courthouse deals with grief after shooting

Just over 72 hours after shots were fired at the Berrien County Courthouse, employees returned to the building.

The courthouse was closed to the public, giving everyone inside time to grieve.

Grief counselors were on hand to help the staff understand and cope with the impact of Monday's shooting.

Judge Gary Bruce says that this was needed for everyone to get ready to heal in order to readily serve the community.

He said that he himself did not have the guts to go on the third floor. A fellow judge encouraged him to do so, leading to flowers being placed at Joe Zanargo and Ron Kienzle's desks.

Although the courthouse is open to the public tomorrow, Judge Bruce is encouraging employees and bailiffs to go speak with grief counselors if they need to. He said that he does not want anyone to keep everything inside.
