BUCHANAN, Mich. - A Buchanan city commissioner will not step down despite urging from residents following a heated meeting Monday night.
As expected, commissioner Dan Vigansky said he will not resign from his position, something he’s been saying for weeks.
But he wasn’t the only one asked to step down: residents also called on Mayor Sean Denison to resign during the meeting.
“…I have sat here for weeks listening to people criticize me, attack me, questioning my ethics and integrity and quite frankly - I'm done with it,” he said. “I have no problem with anyone who disagrees with a decision that I have made. You have the right to disagree. But there are ways to do that, that do not include making a mockery of our local government, and putting our community in a bad light, just because you disagree with the way a situation was handled.”
The city now plans to ask Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to remove Vigansky from office. Vigansky, however, has already reached out to Whitmer’s office, as well as the Michigan Attorney General’s office and has filed multiple open meeting complaints with the sheriff.
The timeline of this issue is unclear, as there’s been no response from state officials shared with the public.
