SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Metro Homicide Commander Tim Corbett held a press conference Wednesday morning to announce his intention to run for St. Joseph County sheriff in 2018.
Corbett has already opened a principal committee, according to the county clerk's office. That means he can start to campaign and raise funds.
Corbett will run as a democrat.
"The St. Joseph County Police Department has gained in training and experience and great manpower and I want to continue leading it down that path. I can do the job. I will do that job and with your support we'll win this in 2018," Corbett said.
Four others have announced they plan on running for sheriff.
William Redman Jr and William Thompson are running as democrats. Jay Duley and Paul Jonas will run as republicans.
Corbett already has an endorsement from the current sheriff.
"Tim is a phenomenal leader. He's a guy that people say I trust someone with my life. Well that means a lot and I trust him with my family's life and he's the kind of guy that can be trusted," Sheriff Mike Grzegorek said.
Candidates can officially file to run for sheriff in January.
