Coroner: Washington Gardens shooting victim has died

According to Elkhart County Chief Deputy Coroner James Elliot, the man who was shot on Sunday in Washington Gardens has died.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday in Kalamazoo, Mich. for 30-year-old Lavell Evans.

According to the Elkhart Police Department, Evans was pronounced deceased Monday evening at Elkhart General Hospital but remained on life support until organ donation arrangements could be made.

The shooting happened just after 8:00 p.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Chapman Avenue, according to police.

26-year-old Marcus Gary was arrested Monday for attempted murder.

In order to charge Gary with murder, the Elkhart Police Department needed to wait until Evans was removed from life support.

The Elkhart Police Department says they will now amend the charge from attempted murder to murder.
