ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. — The Federal Aviation Administration said that a pilot was doing practice approaches to the Goshen Municipal Airport before the plane crashed on Thursday.
The FAA said the Piper PA32 crashed one mile from the airport, 550 yards west of CR 33, between CR 40 and CR 42.
The pilot, Neal Myers, 55, died in the crash. He was the only occupant of the plane.
Witnesses told police that they saw the plane nosedive into the field, striking down power lines in the process.
Crews were on scene around 7:30 a.m. repairing power lines in the area.
The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation with help from the FAA.
