SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the focus shifts to giving rather than buying.

Today is Giving Tuesday! It’s a day where you’re encouraged to support non-profits in your area in an effort to build a world where generosity is a part of everyday life.

Giving Tuesday takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving every year.

The movement started in New York City in 2012, and today its efforts reach all across the globe.

Last year, $2.7 billion was given in the U.S. on Giving Tuesday by over 32 million participating adults – that’s a 9% increase from the year before and a 30% increase from pre-pandemic levels.

Going into this year’s Giving Tuesday, concerns about the economy have some thinking those numbers might drop, but the value of generosity is still strong.

While it is a global movement, there are lots of local non-profits right here in Michiana that you can donate to in celebration of Giving Tuesday.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Joe County is encouraging people to become a ‘Club Champion’ by donating $25 or more every month. United Federal Credit Union is matching every dollar, up to $10,000.

The Humane Society of St. Joe County will have each donation matched up to $5,000 by a generous donor. The Ireland Animal Clinic has also pledged a $100 matching donation.

The Salvation Army Kroc Center in South Bend will be sharing stories of Kroc Center Members for giving Tuesday and asking for donations to its virtual red kettle, so that those stories can keep being added to. You can donate at its website here

South Bend’s oldest non-profit child care center, El Campito Child Development Center, is also trying to raise $25,000 this Giving Tuesday to put towards a new HVAC system for their building.

The Starke County Community Foundation will celebrate Giving Tuesday from 10-3P.M. CT, with lunch served from 11-2P.M. The Hardesty Memorial Endowment Fund allows for a $15,000 donation match opportunity, with donations matched dollar for dollar up to $500 per fund. You can donate to SCFF here.
