Have you received a foreign language robocall?

ABC57 has received a string of robocalls from a Chicago number over the last couple weeks, but the person calling speaks Mandarin, not English. We decided to find out what's happening in case our viewers are experiencing this issue as well.

According to multiple newspapers across the country, the phone calls originate in China and are an attempt to scam Chinese nationals or immigrants.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says the caller claims to be with the Chinese Consulate and the person answering the phone needs to pick up a package. Eventually they ask for money. [Read more about the scam from the FTC.]

The University of Michigan recently warned its students about the scam after a few students received the robocall.

Similar calls have been received by students at Purdue. The Chinese Consulate General in New York issued a statement in April about the scams

If you receive one of these calls, the best thing to do is hang up. If you want to report the call - you can file a complaint with the FTC.
