Here's how Michiana schools' athletics are addressing the heat wave

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich.-- Michiana school districts are canceling or postponing athletic events this week amid extreme heat.

Districts like Niles and Coloma both claim to follow guidelines from the Michigan High School Athletic Association to a T.

The head athletic trainer at Niles, Katie Knisely, said she's been utilizing ice towels and ice baths for athletes all week.

She said it is vital to watch for signs of heat illness.

“A lot of symptoms are actually similar to a concussion. Kind of that disorientation, the drowsiness, not really knowing where you’re at, slurred speech, stumbling can even play a factor in that one too,” Knisely said.
