Michigan State Trooper opens fire on suspect in Benton Harbor
NILES TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Two suspects are on the loose following a homicide and possible home invasion in Niles.
A woman was shot and killed in her basement, allegedly by two strangers.
Her husband managed to get away and called 911, according to Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey.
Bailey says the husband and wife returned from an outing to their home on the 1400 block of Lawndale Avenue.
Upon going into the basement, the couple saw two heavyset black males downstairs, according to the husband.
The husband told investigators one or both of the suspects shot his wife, then left in the couple's car just before 6 p.m.
Police are looking for the car, a black or dark blue 2008 Mazda SUV, with a Michigan licence plate of CMY3721.
Alerts have been put out to law enforcement in all states immediately surrounding Michigan.
The scene is secure and is being investigated by the Berrien County Sheriff and Michigan State Police.
"This is a nice, peaceful neighborhood with lots of good people living in it. So this is not the norm at all," Bailey said.
Crime lab technicians spent the overnight hours Monday at the home.
