Indiana Michigan Power to lower St. Joseph River for dam maintenance

BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. – Indiana Michigan Power will begin to lower the St. Joseph River at the Berrien Springs Hydroelectric Dam for maintenance work later this month.

According to the company, the water will be lowered at a rate of six inches per day starting May 29.

This will affect the area upstream of the dam known as Lake Chapin.

I&M says anyone who uses the river for recreation should be aware of shallow water depths and boats should be dry docked or removed from the water.

Normal water levels will be restored by June 25.
