GOSHEN, Ind. - Lacasa, Inc. announced they were selected to build affordable rental housing, in partnership with Bashor Children’s Home, for youth aging out of foster care.

The new initiative was launched by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) in partnership with the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS).

Proposals were invited for development of affordable apartments with supportive services for youth ages 18 to 23, who have aged out of foster care.

Lacasa was one of four projects statewide selected by IHCDA and DCS to pilot this initiative.

“Partnerships like this maximize our community’s ability to open doors for young adults to gain successful independence,” Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch said, “These four housing projects, including Lacasa’s with Bashor, represent a significant step in that direction and will ensure foster youth are given a chance to live productive, dignified, and independent lives.”

Lacasa states it has plans to develop an 11-unit apartment building in Goshen with the final location and building plans yet to be determined.

Officials say completion is expected by the end of 2025.

Jeremy Stutsman, President, and CEO of Lacasa, Inc., stated, “Through Lacasa’s 54 years of experience, we have seen the transformative difference that safe, quality, and affordable housing can make in people’s lives. Many people move back in with family for a variety of reasons like saving money and support, but for youth aging out of foster care this family safety net is missing. And most need a place to live immediately. Not only is there nowhere to move back to, but also no one to co-sign a new lease, help with a security deposit, or even provide their vital personal documents often needed to access employment and housing. Lacasa is pleased to partner with Bashor to provide foster youth in Elkhart County with access to safe, affordable housing alongside critical support.”

The housing is stated as being private and affordable rental apartments, not an emergency shelter or group/transitional housing, owned and operated by Lacasa.

Bashor says they will refer eligible applicants and provide residents with services such as life skills, mental health counseling, job coaching, GED attainment, and other services.

“Partnerships like this maximize our community’s ability to open doors for young adults to gain successful independence,” said Sean McCrindle, President, and CEO of Bashor Children’s Home. “The connection between stable housing and services is key to young adults aging out of the foster care system in accomplishing goals for productive lives. We are thankful for Indiana making funds available and partners like Lacasa who allow us together to bring this key resource to our community.”
