SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- Many local drivers said on Thursday that they’re tired of the potholes they are seeing around town.

They said some trouble spots include State Road 23 near Ignition Park, Eddy Street going toward Notre Dame, Sample Street from Prairie St. to Lafayette Blvd, and Western Avenue.

“They’re horrible, horrible around here,” said Collin Hazleton, who was on the road today.

Hazleton said one day he was driving near the bypass, going 40 to 50 MPH, when he ran into a pothole.

“It exploded my whole tire and bent the tire rod all up,” he said. “I thought I was going to die.”

One man sent this tweet shown below to South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg about the road conditions:

Northwest Indiana’s Department of Transportation sent the following statement regarding the potholes within the city:

“INDOT crews have had a challenging turnaround week, following two weeks of non-stop winter weather. Plow/salt crews were on the roads 24/7 since before Christmas Eve. The INDOT fleet has taken a beating and preventative maintenance work has had to take precedence this week as we prepare for more winter weather beginning early Friday morning. INDOT patched areas with the greatest need earlier this week, but full scale patching efforts will have to wait until the next winter storm passes.”
