SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Bob Nagle has spent 38 years covering Notre Dame sports. He got to know Ara Parseghian well.

"The infection that took him is one that maybe if you were 40-years-old you battle through it," said Nagle,"but at 94 it's a tough assignment."

Nagle called into ABC57 News shortly after news broke of his death.

"The first thing that popped in my mind is that he is going to hug those grandchildren that he lost," said Nagle.

Parseghian lost three of his grandchildren to a rare genetic disease called Neimann-Pick Disease Type C.

"He raised millions of dollars for research that will one day payoff with a cure for Neimann-Pick Disease and for many other diseases," said Nagle.

Nagle says in recent years Parseghian would often tell him he was 'ready to go'.

"The guy lived a tremendous life for 94 years," said Nagle. "What a dynamic man, what a terrific person and humble guy for so much that he had done."
