South Bend Fire Department employee on leave, charged with felony

An employee with the South Bend Fire Department is now on administrative leave after criminal charges were filed against him.

During a meeting Wednesday morning, the South Bend Fire Department requested Fronse Smith be placed on leave, and the Board of Public Safety approved the request.

According to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office, Smith was charged with intimidation in May 2015, which is a Level 6 felony.

His jury trial is scheduled to begin Thursday September 24.

Smith will be on unpaid administrative leave until his criminal case is resolved.
