Man in critical condition, found unresponsive in Diamond Lake Thursday

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department reports that 84-year-old Paul Schafer of Bremen is listed in critical condition at South Bend Memorial Hospital.

Marine Deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call on Lake Street on the West side of Diamond Lake at approximately 3:10 p.m. on Thursday. 

Witnesses say that Schafer was sitting in a floating lawn chair near a pier when a neighbor noticed Schafer’s hat floating in the water.

Family members found Schafer underwater and pulled him onto the dock where he was unresponsive.

CPR was administered and he was taken to the hospital.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Life Care ambulance, Cassopolis Central Fire department, Michigan State Police, and the Cass County Road Patrol.
