Devin Butler appears in court

Devin Butler, the Notre Dame Football player who was arrested over the weekend, appeared in court on Wednesday.

Butler's father and girlfriend were by his side.

The cornerback is facing two charges - resisting law enforcement and battery to a police officer, both level six felonies.

Butler entered a preliminary plea of not guilty, and told the judge he has hired an attorney.

His next court date is September 1 with Judge Jeffrey Sanford.

Butler says his attorney advised him not to comment.

Butler is accused of injuring a police officer outside a local bar.

Police say Butler knocked South Bend Officer Aaron Knepper to the ground and removed his duty belt. 

Butler is one of six Notre Dame players arrested over the weekend.

Five of Butler's teammates were arrested on separate charges in Fulton County Friday.

On Sunday, Head Coach Brian Kelly announced Butler was placed on indefinite suspension.
