Lawn care worker struck by vehicle, seriously injured

An Enterprise Rent-A-Car employee struck a lawn care worker and a building Friday morning while attempting to back into a parking space, according to a release from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office.

The lawn care worker was seriously injured.

According to investigators, the Enterprise employee was backing into a parking spot when he struck 32-year-old Jeffrey Bishop.

The driver continued in reverse and the vehicle struck the India Garden Restaurant, where the vehicle came to a rest.

"It looked like really bad. The glass was broken inside and outside," India Garden Restaurant chef Bally Chema said.

Bishop was taken to Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He is undergoing surgery.

Pursuant to protocol, the Fatal Crash Team (FACT) was activated to investigate because of the severity of Bishop's injuries.

There are no indications intoxication was a factor, reports said.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the crash was a result of a mechanical failure, medical condition or human error.

Police say the employee is 77-years-old and and has a clean work history with no indication of accidents like this in the past.
