Students collect thousands of socks for others in need

Students at Tippecanoe Valley Middle School collected thousands of socks to warm the feet of those who need it the most.

The school says the idea was sparked by a Pinterest post which resulted in 2,774 total pairs of socks being collected for other children in need during the winter.

Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders spent October collecting the new and gently used garments in a friendly competition. 

“My mom brought seven bags in. She really wanted to help people,” said a sixth grade student.

Guidance counselor Suanne Siebrase and a social studies teacher say they noticed many students did not have socks for the winter in 2015.

“After you pay the bills and put food on the table, a lot of times there is not enough money for socks,” said Siebrase.

The collected socks will first be offered to students in the middle school, elementary schools, and pre-schools and any remaining socks will be offered to the community. 

This school wasn't the only school taking part in this cause.

Students at Willoughby-Eastlake School of Innovation in Willoughby, Ohio report on their Facebook page that over 10,500 socks were collected for the homeless in Lake County, Ohio.
