ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart Police were called to a home Monday night to conduct a welfare check and found a woman's body.
Officers responded to the home in the 1200 block of Prairie Street around 7:30 to conduct the welfare check.
When police entered the home, they found 57-year-old Sherry Houston deceased.
Members of the Elkhart County Homicide Unit and the coroner's office responded to the scene.
Police say, after autopsy results came back Tuesday, they’re now investigating Houston’s death as a homicide based on her injuries.
“I don’t even know how to express other than my dear.. Beautiful amazing friend is no longer with us and it’s going to be a loss to everyone,” said one neighbor who wishes to remain anonymous.
One neighbor who says she and Houston were very close couldn’t believe it when she heard.
“It’s disbelief, anger, and um… fear. Ms. Sherry was an amazing woman… who took care of everybody but herself,” said that neighbor.
The case remains under investigation by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit.
