ATV accidents are cropping up as summer arrives

Summer is fast approaching and with it all the outdoor activities Hoosiers like to do.

However, safety should always be top priority and the season has already experienced its share of accidents including one with a baby in an ATV.

This week, authorities have responded to multiple crashes resulting from ATV rides.

Indiana Conservation Officer Jonathan Boyd says it happened Thursday night in Miami County.

"The crash occurred on private property. The operator had little experience, he was only 14 years old. The ATV had flipped upside down, neither occupant, the one year old or the 14 year old, were wearing any type of protective gear or helmet," said Officer Boyd.

That teen remains in serious condition. Authorities say the crash is still being investigated.

Two other accidents occurred in Fulton and Marshall counties.

Officer Boyd says unfortunately people don't always realize ATVs are not toys, but motor vehicles as powerful as any car.

"If you are going to be on an ATV, follow manufacturer recommendations -- most manufacturers recommend that you be at least 16 years old. State law requires that you not operate on the roadway. If it's a county that allows you to operate on the roadway, you are required to have a valid Indiana driver's license," Boyd said.
