Man killed following South Bend crash

UPDATE: On Friday, April 19, 2024, Walter Allen was sentenced to a total of 9 years in prison, with 4 days credit. The entire sentence was suspended.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- One man was killed following a head-on collision Friday night in South Bend. 

Officials say the crash occurred when Walter Elkins Allen attempted to pass another vehicle while driving east on the Lincolnway Highway near Sherman Avenue. He did not have enough room to make the pass and struck another vehicle heading west.

Allen had a passenger in his vehicle, Donnivan Allen, who was rushed to the hospital following the collision and later died from his injuries. 

Allen was arrested and booked into the St. Joseph County Jail following the incident and faces charges of OWI causing serious bodily injury and OWI causing death. He will be arraigned on Monday, June 12 at 1 p.m. 

There is no official word on the condition of the other driver involved in the crash.
