In 2011, WBND-TV, ABC57, saw a need in the Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan community for better local news coverage.
ABC57 began local news coverage in April 2011. The station employed the most Multi-Media Journalists in the South Bend market and embedded them into the local communities. The theory: more reporters in the community would uncover more stories which previously went uncovered.
Since that time, television industry professionals from across the United States have recognized ABC57’s award-winning work, including recognition for investigations, community involvement, and “Outstanding Newscast” achievements as part of 10 Emmy awards from the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).
In all, ABC57 News has earned three national and 12 Regional Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio, Television, Digital, News Association along with 20 Indiana Broadcasters Association Spectrum Awards.
In addition to a clear focus on local, relevant reporting, ABC57 is a leader in expanded breaking news and severe weather coverage. The station’s “Project Tornado” efforts have educated thousands of Michiana children on how to find a safe spot in the event of a storm. ABC57 regularly produces local debates and long-form specials on important issues.
The station’s deep relationship with the University of Notre Dame includes exclusive gameday “ABC57 Kick-Off” broadcasts before most football games and select men’s and women’s basketball games.
As an ABC affiliate, ABC57 provides the area with live sports including NFL and SEC football, NBA and WNBA basketball, and MLB playoff games.
The ABC57 team also produces newscasts and local programming for Michiana stations WCWW (The CW) and WMYS (MyNet).
ABC57 is owned by Weigel Broadcasting Co. Weigel is a leader in operating national broadcast television entertainment networks such as MeTV.
